COMPANIES SETTLE ON BLUE-LASER DVD STANDARD
Nine consumer electronics companies have agreed to back a uniform standard
for next-generation blue-laser DVDs. Blue-laser light, with a shorter
wavelength than the red variety, can be concentrated into a finer beam,
enabling it to read and write significantly more data on a given area of
disc space. "We are not so far away from producing (blue-laser DVDs) in
mass quantities," says a Philips Electronics spokesman, who added that the
pact was intended "to end speculation on what we wanted to do with blue
laser and to show a uniform face." Joining in the pact are Philips, Sony,
Matsushita, Hitachi, Pioneer, Sharp, Samsung, LG Electronics and Thomson
Multimedia. Licensing of the new format will begin in the spring. (Reuters
